The Mullica River and Great Bay are among the very cleanest river and estuarine systems on the east coast of the United States. Federal designation as a “Wild and Scenic River” would help to keep it that way.

A River Rich in History
On certain parts of the Mullica, past and between the settlements of Sweetwater, Green Bank, and Lower Bank, there exists a vision of place that would be recognizable to people who traveled up this river even hundreds of years ago. For thousands of years, the Lenni-Lenape people lived, fished, hunted, and cultivated the lands along the Mullica. From early European exploration to the Revolutionary War, the river and its surrounding communities have played a vital role in our region’s history.

Protection Under Threat
Thanks to the Pinelands National Reserve, Wharton State Forest, and decades of conservation, much of the Mullica watershed remains protected. However, new forces are gathering to attack the legal and regulatory structures that have protected the river over the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Data centers are gobbling up land, water, and electricity wherever it can be found – and in areas like ours with fresh water, we are in the crosshairs, and currrently data center, fossil fuel industry, and off road vehicle industry lobby are spear heading a campaign to stop the protection of the Mullica River.

The Solution
Conservation requires pushing forward and in so doing, we create the circumstances that enable success when communities need to fight back against powers that would strip the land, pollute the water, and impoverish the local residents. Federal Wild and Scenic Designation, through the community led Partnership Wild and Scenic Program as proposed in S.4595 sponsored by Senators Booker and Kim and H.R.8924 sponsored by Congressmen Conaway and Van Drew, would help us organize and fight back when the inevitably we must press the case to keep the river just like it is today, Wild, Scenic, and as clean as we can keep it. Before it was our ancestors who fought for the River, today it is up to us and we have the opportunity now, to see it protected well into the future.

Message

We call on our elected officials and community leaders to support Wild and Scenic designation for the Mullica River and Great Bay. Let us honor the generations who protected these waters before us and ensure that future generations inherit a river that remains wild, scenic, and clean.

My motivation for signing this petition is to safeguard the environment for future generations to enjoy. Every day, more green spaces are being destroyed for various reasons that I strongly disagree with.

  • Kieran DaSilva

The Mullica River is one of the only remaining wild rivers in NJ that is essential to protect in order to preserve the hundreds of unique species of plants and wildlife that call the Pine Barrens home.

  • Amanda Love

To protect the environment for our children

  • Rose Flahive

Moral and ethical reasons to protect the environment aside, if we do not protect the land and ecosystems around us, it will increase the dangers of weather and climate emergencies. So to those who claim environmentalism isn’t worth fighting for: From even just a practical approach, this is the right thing to do.

  • Ralph Downey Jr.

The pinebarrens has been my home for 27 years. I was born and raised in Ocean County and have seen what over developing has done for other parts of where I live. Its truly a shame that people want to turn such a beautiful place into something industrial. This CANNOT happen. And together we can make sure that it WILL NOT happen.

  • Alexis Freiling

The Mullica River is a bastion of nature's true purpose, as a place of beauty not just for humanity to explore but also for the animals that deserve to have their lives left alone instead of facing intrusion by human greed. After working and surveying on the Mullica River it's easy to say that it serves as a necessary environment for keystone species in our state and without protecting it our biodiversity is going to suffer majorly and as humans we'll see the immediate ramifications affect our quality of life.

  • Heidi Louis

To protect the Mullica River, it is NJ treasure.

Our national resources need to be protected. Climate change continues to cause disastrous storms and fires that cost lives, people’s homes and taxpayers millions of dollars every year. I have a deep respect, love, and connection to nature. Bodies of water are among the sum of which fascinate me a lot. I love fishing from them and gazing at them for hours too. Taking away a natural resource like this is disgraceful and disgusting and any human who thinks about destroying something beautiful like this should be imprisoned. This is an animals ecosystem we’re talking about. Their home, and I will do everything in my power to protect that.

As a former long time resident of NJ who visits the Pine Barrens several times a year, I strongly believe in protecting NJ's rivers and aquifers. NJ's rivers and aquifers enable New Jersey residents - people and animals to thrive.) South Jersey farmland provides wonderful plant and animal food. I strongly oppose allowing data centers in; they exploit resources for their financial gain. No one wants to see them anywhere near the Pine Barrens!!!

The Mullica River is one of, if not THE last remaining wild waterway NJ has. Since it runs through the already protected Pinelands, the river and its tributaries should also be protected from development of any kind. Those of us who have been on the water or hiked the trails within its watershed knows its a special place.

It's vital we protect the most pristine river in the East: the Mullica River. The time is NOW. It's for us and every future generation. It provides enjoyment & recreation for people, healthy populations of animals & local/migratory birds, and is the least disturbed wetlands habitat in the Northeastern US. Please protect our priceless natural inheritance.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to kayak on the Mullica River. I felt transported to a time to before Europeans arrived here. I didn't see invasive plants. I didn't hear alot of noise. I didn't see people. I could slow down and breath. I felt spaciousness even in the heart of the most densely populated state. I marveled and rejoiced at the wisdom of generations before me who knew this place was special and who protected it from development and sprawl. Wild places like the Mullica River restore my spirit.

The pinebarrens has been my home for 27 years. I was born and raised in Ocean County and have seen what over developing has done for other parts of where I live.

The Mullica is one of the most beatuiful and clean rivers in New Jersey and the eastern seaboard. I am asking you to help protect the Mullica River by signing this petition. A data center and fossil fuel lobbyist is working with ORV industry groups to try and stop the protection of the Mullica, one of the last and best, and cleanest rivers on the East Coast of the United States. To stand up for the river, sign the petition to protect it.
